Good Luck Hiring!

We all need some luck or lots of luck when it comes to hiring a new employee.  Hiring is Challenging.  Not only are people complex to figure out, but predicting future job fit behavior with limited information is not easy.  The best designed hiring process for each job will increase your odds of hiring the best candidate.  The ability of the hiring manager(s) plays a crucial part too.

Not only are you trying to hire someone who gets along with co-workers, someone the manager can manage and develop, but most importantly someone that can meet or exceed your expectations doing their job properly.  I have seen many hiring managers forget this important piece of the puzzle, ‘meeting job expectations’.

Over the years I have heard hiring managers give reasons they want to hire a candidate that are shallow.  In some of these cases, the candidate’s job fit assessment scores showed caution flags and reasons to interview further or not hire at all.   Following are some statements that are common to hear from hiring managers and a comment by us.

  • We liked them (Great, but can they do the job?)
  • They seemed nice (That is a plus if ‘nice’ is the most important part of their job description)
  • They interviewed great (This can be very subjective.  If a great interview always lead to a successful hire, hiring would be simpler.  What does interviewed great mean and predict?)
  • They had a great resume (Many questions could be asked.  Each previous company and manager is different with expectations, philosophies, etc…  One could argue relativity between companies and managers is very important.  What is considered a job well done by company A is considered average at Company B)
  • We are having problems finding quality candidates, this is the best candidate that applied (Congratulations, you just hired a bottom performer.  That impatient technique usually comes back to bite you in the long run.)
  • On the flip side, their Assessment scores are great (That’s great, but is everything else at least acceptable to warrant hiring this candidate?)

Finding the perfect candidate is not the goal.  We humans are not perfect.  If the candidates’ strengths can carry them to the finish line while their weaknesses are small bumps in the road, your next hire will be a success
